What’s it really like to live and work in the Middle East?

Tired of the everyday drudgery of your teaching life? Want to live and teach somewhere exotic? Want to experience something new in your teaching career? If yes, then you should consider moving to and becoming a teacher in the Middle East, or more specifically, the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The UAE is a nation comprising of seven emirates, with Abu Dhabi as the capital and Dubai the modern metropolis. A rapidly advancing and multicultural nation, UAE has warm weather, great job opportunities and a dynamic, exciting atmosphere. Here are some of the reasons you should consider working and living in the UAE.

  1. Financial benefits

Expat incomes are not taxed in the UAE. This can mean that the expat population has a considerable amount of disposable income, perhaps even more income than they would earn at home. Expats are often given other benefits such as flight allowances, accommodation and medical insurance. All of this translates into less expenditure and more disposable income to either save for their future or experience UAE’s rich culture and luxury more freely.

  2. Availability of positions

The UAE compromises of up-and-coming economies that rely on expat knowledge, labor and expertise to build their economic, physical and social infrastructure. There are a range of positions in the teaching community directly targeting expats for their advanced knowledge and skills. The UAE is host to multiple schooling systems that follow international curricula which then necessitate international teachers. Teaching positions are extremely rewarding because they come with benefits and relative job security as contracts are often for 2-3 years.

  3. Diversity

There are multiple nationalities and ethnic groups in the UAE, with a majority expat population, making the region a huge melting pot of different cultures and identities. You will get the opportunity to live with, work with, and socialize with people from various cultures. You will also get the chance to enjoy different cultural cuisines and activities as the UAE has art, food, and other cultural markers that will be thoroughly enriching.

If you’re unsure about the next step in your career, or considering the Middle East but slightly hesitant to shift to the region for teaching employment opportunities, either due to worries about leaving home and/or living in a foreign country, remember that the UAE is a diverse, modern and forward-thinking regional hub with a wonderfully diverse population.
